Based on oil palm free (Elaeis guineensis) cold processed and then salted out or neutralized soap, this tooth soap has a high content of olive oil (95%). I also use baking soda and myrrh as well as essential oils for freshness and a great aroma. Free from preservatives, and harsh abrasives, this paste keeps your teeth clean and your breath fresh.

What does salting out mean? Salting out of soap is a traditional method of separating glycerin from soap. This process is a bit laborious and long winded but I found it works well with handmade, cold processed soap. It involves pouring brine into the boiling soap which then causes the soap molasse to ascend to the top and the water and glycerin to the bottom of the pan. The brine is poured away and the process should be repeated up to three times. The remaining, cleansed soap molasse is then boiled again with a sodium hydroxide solution until all oils are completely saponified. The soap is then put into soap forms, left to dry for 24 hours, taken out of its form, cut up into pieces and then left to ripen for 4 - 6 weeks.

Neutralizing soap involves heating and boiling the soap molasse over a period of time which dissolves the glycerin and saponifies all oils. Again this is a long winded process and may take up to 1 week depending on the oils used. The follow-on procedure is the same as described above. curing time again is roughly 4 - 6 weeks.

To Use: squeeze a pea sized amount onto your dry toothbrush and brush your teeth thoroughly. Rinse well with lukewarm water. Use within 2 months of opening.

Ingredients: purified water; saponified olive oil; coconut oil, babassu oil, shea butter, castor oil, sesame oil, sodium bicarbonate, myrrh extract, tea tree oil or peppermint oil or unflavoured. Also available without sodium bicarbonate.

Keep at room temperature - this paste may harden if kept too cool. Replace cap firmly after use so as to keep water out. Use within 3 months of opening.
