There is no doubt that there is a momentum building in the race to try and persuade people out of their petrol driven vehicles and into greener alternatives. Petrol companies are now saying that oil is still available in vast quantities, but in more difficult to reach places, but the idea that cars can be bought which may have a less harmful effect on the environment is something that seems to be gaining ground in popularity. However, although the idea has been around for a while, the movement towards more environmentally friendly cars has been slow. This may be because the bulk of the work to create an eco-friendly vehicle has been left in the hands of the car manufacturers, who may have a vested in interest in maintaining the status quo. The green agenda is now firmly near the top of the priority list, and there seems to have substantial progress in some areas towards producing, and even mass producing, greener vehicles. There is no doubt that people love their cars. Public transport has so far not provided a popular enough answer to persuade people to leave their vehicles at home, although there are more train services. Some of the car companies have now managed to produce hybrid cars which match, and in some cases improve on performance of some petrol driven cars. However, the problem at the moment is just as much about the support infrastructure to keep green cars moving as much as it is about creating the ideal eco-friendly model.
In essence, there are three main types of environmentally friendly car. Some use alternative fuels, while others use the fuels we use at present, more efficiently. The third option is a hybrid of both these approaches. For a number of years, the option has existed to provide vehicles which use, or can be converted to Liquefied Petroleum Gas, usually known as LPG. Many manufacturers offer the option on some of their new models. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is generally cheaper and cleaner than petrol. Another alternative, which is even cleaner than LPG, is Compressed Natural gas. Again, some of the manufacturers are starting to produce a limited range of models, but finding somewhere to supply you with fuel may be difficult, and there may be as few as fifty places in the United Kingdom, capable of supplying drivers with this types of fuel. Electric cars may be the future of environmentally friendly cars. Manufacturers have been able to produce batteries which supply power for longer, at comparable speeds as some petrol vehicles, and there is no doubting their attraction. Some of the latest models available have long waiting lists, even though the initial costs of the vehicles are high. At the moment, the most likely option in the short term is a hybrid combination of two different power sources. This may be something such as a conventional petrol engine combined with a generator or electric motor, which will allow the car to drive mainly on electric power, with the option of using petrol when extra power is needed. The future of eco- friendly cars is likely to be a mix of different types of fuel sources and whether one source dominates over the other, or whether another as yet undeveloped fuel source becomes the most popular option will be revealed over time.
