In the southern region of Costa Rica live 2,100 Borucan Indians. For as long as anyone can remember, they have lived in this ancestral home; now a reserve surrounded by rainforest.
The Borucan Indians are no different than any of us. They seek the means for financial security, a better life for their children and a bond with their history and culture. Their challenge is just more daunting as they live in a remote region of the world with limited economic opportunities.
A cultural thread that remains vital to their community is their passion for their arts as illustrated in the remarkable ceremonial masks and spectacularly coloured weaving made with all natural dyes. However, this thread remains fragile. There are currently only five master carvers and twelve master weavers in Boruca.
A recent interest in their arts from the outside world sheds hope that other Borucans will find carving, painting and weaving a viable option for meeting basic needs as well as reinvigorating their culture.
In a world of mass production and globalisation, the Borucans have maintained their tradition of hand making each piece with care, personal expression and artistic quality. We have found nothing like it anywhere else.
