Our Northern Ghanaian (Sherigu) unrefined shea butter is a beautiful creamy, beige coloured butter that is made traditionally under fair trade and organic guidelines. Our current shea butter is from the summer 2011 nut harvest which is the freshest available shea butter on the market. The nuts are from wild grown trees (not sprayed ones) and are collected when they are at their ripest. They are then washed in drinking water, shelled and layed onto racks to dry for a month. After that time the nuts are crushed and soaked in water that is gently heated until an oil film forms on the water surface. This oil is then removed and filtered (not refined) and then allowed to cool down so that the actual shea butter forms.
The shea butter is extracted without using hexane or other chemicals, it is not bleached, refined or deodorized. We do not add preservatives, yellow colouring agents (natural or artificial), or other additives to our unrefined shea butter. We bring it to you fresh and in its purest & most natural state which is why our butter sometimes has a more beige colour and at other times are more yellow-cream than other butters on the market.
Like all premium unrefined shea butters, it has a characteristic nutty and also chocolatey scent, which disappears after a few minutes when rubbed on skin. This type of shea butter is very sought after as it is used instead of cocoa butter in the production of fine chocolates.
Our unrefined shea butter is a very versatile active ingredient for skin and hair care products, and has excellent anti-aging, soothing and moisturizing properties.
